Nowadays, anyone with an internet-connected device and an opinion seems to be an expert on what you should or shouldn't eat, which exercises are optimal for muscle growth, and which types of cardio are most effective for weight loss. With the increasing number of "do's and don'ts" about achieving health and wellness, it can be misleading. I understand why there are so many questions. More importantly, I understand the confusion when people ask me about various topics and I often respond with "it depends."

When you think of exercise these days, it's all about heavy squats, deadlifts, burpees, and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). Now, I solemnly swear I won’t ever make a
client do burpees 🙄...but squats, deadlifts, and interval training? Oh, those are definitely on the menu! Meanwhile, the fitfluencers of the internet are each riding their own golden unicorn, promising you chiseled abs, bigger buns, and guns in just 8 weeks for the bargain price of $20. I mean, who can resist a deal like that when I’m charging by the hour?

Issues typically start to come up due to one major factor: life itself. Life is unpredictable and often throws curveballs that can disrupt even the most well-laid plans. While dedicating 8 weeks to incredible discipline and consistency can indeed kickstart a significant transformation in one's health and wellness, it is essential to recognize that a multitude of events and circumstances can arise during that time, all because of... well, life. For instance, you might find yourself facing unexpected work meetings and tight deadlines that suddenly materialize just as you are about to step out the door to meet friends for a long-awaited drink or to pick up your kids from their various extracurricular activities. These interruptions can create a ripple effect, making it challenging to stick to your fitness regimen or healthy eating habits.

Moreover, physical challenges can also emerge. You may experience little niggles and kinks in your knees that simply do not agree with the rigorous demands of Jessica's Buns of Steel 8 Week Summer Shred plan, which was designed to cater to a wide audience but may not take into account individual differences in body mechanics or prior injuries. It's crucial to listen to your body and adjust your routine accordingly, rather than pushing through pain that could lead to more significant issues down the line. Additionally, consider the qualifications of those leading your fitness classes. The local HIIT class instructor, for example, may have the equivalent fitness education to that of a Kindergartner, which raises concerns about the quality of guidance provided. While enthusiasm and motivation are essential in fitness training, they cannot replace the nuanced understanding that comes from extensive education and experience in the field. The value of having a knowledgeable trainer who has spent tens of thousands of hours working through various client issues and adapting programs accordingly cannot be overstated. This kind of expertise is irreplaceable and can significantly impact your journey toward health and wellness. So, how do you navigate these challenges? How do you maintain your commitment to your health amidst the chaos of everyday life?
The answer lies in developing resilience and adaptability. Acknowledging that life will always present obstacles and that this a lifestyle not quick fix is the first step. From there, you can create a flexible plan that allows for adjustments when necessary, ensuring that you remain on track even when faced with unexpected events. Embrace the journey, recognizing that it is not a straight path but rather a winding road filled with ups and downs. By fostering a mindset of perseverance and understanding that no two approaches are the same, you can achieve your health and wellness goals, regardless of the hurdles that life may throw your way.
